Tafenoquine for Babesiosis

Tafenoquine is a relatively new medication approved or the treatment of malaria (FDA approved 2018) that has recently been repurposed as a treatment for Babesiosis, a relatively common tick borne infection in parts of the United States. Because Babesia is a common co-infection with Lyme disease, clinicians have begun using tafenoquine in patients with “treatment resistant Lyme disease.” Initial animal studies and human case reports show promise for this newer medication, though larger scale studies of its use for Babesiosis are still underway.
